Kinvara Regatta 1992: Joe Sterling

£6.70

Kinvara's Cruinniú na mBád, or the Gathering of the Boats, in 1992 marked a significant event. Now, in 2023, the festival commemorates its 43rd anniversary, celebrated on the boundary of County Clare and County Galway along Ireland's western coast in August.

This gathering is a vibrant tribute to the enduring traditions of the working turf boats. Galway Hookers, essential vessels that traversed between North County Clare, Connemara in County Galway, and the Aran Islands, served as lifelines for communities lacking turf. Turf, abundant in Connemara, was vital for survival, especially during the harsh winters, as it provided both fuel and warmth for cooking. These festivals play a crucial role in preserving local boat building and craftsmanship traditions, as many of these boats have been passed down through generations, some dating back over a century.

The Galway Hooker remains an integral part of Connemara's cultural fabric, with skills and knowledge handed down from fathers to sons, ensuring the continuity of this cherished heritage.
