Posted by Emily Harris onIf you're new to the world of martingale dog collars there might be some useful information you need to know, like, what is a martingale? What breeds can use a martingale? and how do you fit a martingale collar? Our handy blog explains a few need-to-knows to help you choose the right collar for your dog.
What is a martingale collar?
A martingale collar is often referred to as a limited-slip or no-slip collar. This type of collar suits a dog breed that has a head narrower than its neck, popular amongst owners of Whippets, Greyhounds, Salukis, and many other sighthound dog breeds.
Can you use a martingale is you don't have a sighthound breed?
Absolutely, you can use martingale collars with many other dog breeds as well. They are great for if you want more control during leash training. But as these tend to slip on be aware if your dog is an escape artist as you then might want to opt for a more secure clasp collar.
How does a martingale collar work?
A martingale collar is made up of two loops. The larger loop is slipped onto the dog's neck and a lead is then clipped to the D-ring on the smaller loop. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the leash pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck.
Since the collar is adjustable, it won’t tighten beyond your dog’s neck width if properly fitted. This way, you can provide comfort without harming your pooch.
How to measure for a martingale dog collar?
Measure 1) the largest part of your dog's head, and 2) the middle of his/her neck.
If your dog's head is larger than its neck, you will use your dogs head measurement to determine the size you need. If your dogs neck is larger than his head, you will use your dogs neck measurement to determine the size you need.
Add a little extra for comfort! At least 1” inch for smaller dogs and 2” inch for larger dogs
When your collar arrives:
Adjust the collar it to it's largest size, working the adjuster as far down as big as it will go
Slip the collar over your dog's nose and head. Once at the neck, adjust it down to a size for some wiggle room. You should be able to fit a finger or two in between your dogs collar and neck comfortably.
Attach your leash to the D-ring on the loop of the collar, and you are ready for walkies! 🐾
